Known as Reiki, the spiritual practice initiated in the 1920s by a Japanese, Mikao Usui, uses palm healing as a form of alternative medicine. It is based on transferring ki energy through the palms.
There are two Reiki branches, the traditional Japanese Reiki and a Western branch within which there are three ‘degrees’ (First, Second and Master/Teacher degree). At First degree, the practitioner can heal himself or herself and other people as well; at Second, he or she will be able to heal people from a distance (this is also called distant healing); the Master degree enables one to teach the practice to others.
In Western Reiki healing, we understand that the practice works in conjunction with the meridian energy lines and the seven chakras. The hand positions are used on the front or/and back of the body, namely on specific areas which allow energy coming from the palms of the healer to improve the condition and balance mind, body and soul to promote healing.
For a whole body treatment, the recipient will lie down and the practitioner will place his or her hands in different positions on the patient’s body.
There are 12 commonly used hand positions but some practitioners rely on their intuition to find other places that might need healing energy. This energy can heal on different levels: physical, mental, emotional and energetic level. The recipient usually feels some kind of tingling or warmth on or near the area that is envisaged.
Reiki practitioners do encourage their patients to consult a doctor when serious conditions occur. After all, Reiki appeared only to complement conventional medicine, not to substitute it.
